As memories of summer begin to fade, you may not be too fond of the shorter days and harsher conditions. Luckily, it’s not all doom and gloom! During this time, there are plenty of celebrations to look forward to, from Halloween and Bonfire Night to Christmas and New Years Eve. These occasions are often filled with enough food and festivities to make you forget all about your last summer holidays.
When you think about Halloween and Christmas, you may already have a clear idea about what food you expect to eat. Ask anyone about what food they would eat on bonfire night and you may find that they soon become lost for words. Even after indulging in various treats from Halloween, it doesn’t have to stop there. There are many unique and traditional meals and snacks that are also enjoyed on Fireworks Night. In this article, we will be highlighting a few recipes and traditional food that is eaten throughout Halloween, Bonfire Night, Christmas and Boxing Day.
Halloween often sees a large increase in the popularity of pumpkins for a very short period of time. After carving out your pumpkin, the flesh can actually be used in a wide range of recipes, including a whole host of warm and tasty soups and broths. Get creative, perhaps by even subbing out ingredients of your favourite meals with some pumpkin you may find that secret ingredient that you never knew you were missing.
On Guy Fawkes Night, many people enjoy to roast marshmallows, after all, why waste an open fire? For this reason, any recipe that involves marshmallows will always go down well. On top of this, many people also like to cook other things over the fire, from sausages and popcorn to baked potatoes. There is really no end to the variety of food that you can cook over a fire. So if you don’t often enjoy sitting around a fire then make sure to take full advantage of it, the next time you see one may be on New Year’s Eve, or perhaps even in the next summer which doesn’t seem to come around quick enough.
Let’s be real here, less than a week after Halloween, you should still have some sweets left. In the event that you don’t, many shops will be selling discount treats so it is the perfect time to indulge your sweet tooth. After all, how often do we get the opportunity to eat candy apples! If you are able to resist eating all of your sweets too quickly, then you may even be able to have a steady source of sugar for your sweet tooth all the way up to Christmas.
Let’s face it, if you are thinking about the best food that tends to be enjoyed on special occasions then Christmas food has got to be somewhere on your list. Christmas dinner is often one of the largest meals that you will have in the year. On top of this the food doesn’t stop after this meal, the whole of the Christmas period is filled with various traditional recipes.
Mince pies, candy canes, turkey, and Christmas pudding, there is so much food that is traditionally eaten during the Christmas period. Throughout the day, don’t miss the opportunity to enjoy various different chocolate and sweets that tend to go around as these may be gone before you realise it. Although the Christmas meal is the main event, there are plenty of snacks available to graze on while you wait. Just make sure that you save room for your dinner.
If you are looking to spice things up, there are many ways that you can add some variation to your Christmas food. For example, have you ever tried cooking your brussel sprouts in curry sauce with bacon bits? This is just one example where traditions can be flipped on their head in order to have a new tasting experience.
Christmas food has the habit of including a lot of different meat. Although this may have been a lot more welcomed in the past, it is more apparent that there is a much higher demand for vegan food today than there has ever been. If one of your loved ones has opted for a vegetarian or vegan diet, it is worth searching online for some other options that they will enjoy, after all, Christmas is a time for giving.
One option includes cooking a vegan nut roast and vegan pie. There are also recipes for various vegan alternatives for many Christmas desserts. For example, vegan Christmas pudding and vegan tiffins. With more and more reasons to consider reducing our meat consumption, it is definitely worth considering replacing one dish with a vegan option this Christmas.
New Years Day
New Years Day can be a minefield when it comes to food. You may still be in the festive mindset, if your family are still visiting and there is still lots of food and drink left over from the holiday period. You may begin to hate yourself as you continue to gorge on that tin of chocolates that one of your relatives has given you for Christmas.
On the other hand, New Years Day can also be a time to change your eating habits. For this reason, you may consider opting for much healthier meals on New Year’s Day. If you are stuck for ideas but are looking for fresh ideas to help you to achieve your resolution this year, there is an abundance of recipes online that are available for free. If you are more old school then even purchasing a cookbook may be right up your street.
With so many days to celebrate during the winter season, there is a variety for food out there for everyone. We hope that we have given you a few great ideas for this festive season. From Halloween all the way through to New Year’s Day, there is something for everyone. If you are entertaining guests this holiday season then it is essential to have a kitchen that works for you. 8 Kitchen Hacks Collated by Mode Designer Kitchens and Bedrooms
The concept of sharing is so integral within the world of cooking. Many families will pass on recipes for generations and recipe books are readily available in stores as well as being accessible online. On top of this, anyone who has lived in a shared house will have, at some point, shared their recipes or tips with one another. Finally, sitting down to share a meal with your friends or family is a cultural experience celebrated throughout the world.
Although cooking can be a very relaxing experience at times, there are many tasks that can make cooking rather stressful indeed. Although many are dismissed as “old wives tales”, through years of collective experimentation and communication, there are now many hacks that can be used to alleviate the stress caused by the more cumbersome tasks in the kitchen.
At Mode Designer Kitchens & Bedrooms, our team of experienced kitchen designers and fitters have installed numerous kitchens for our clients in Nantwich and the surrounding areas. If you are looking for kitchens in Nantwich or kitchen designers in Nantwich, enquire now using an online contact form on our website or telephone our team now on: 01782 610 999.
In this article we have provided the top hacks to help ensure that your cooking experience is as stress-free as possible:
Bananas Turning Brown
For those of us that like to stay healthy, as well as saving money, buying food in bulk may seem like the best course of action. When buying fruit, this often proves to be a problem if you are not able to eat it in time. This tip is a surefire way to stop your bananas from going off too soon.
Bananas become overripe very quickly due to the ethylene gas that is released from the tops of the stems. By separating each banana and wrapping the stem in a plastic wrap, this reduced the amount of gas that can escape, thus increasing the time it takes for your bananas to turn brown.
Bonus Hack: By using this knowledge, you can also rapidly ripen any other fruit that you wish by placing them closer to your bananas (without plastic wraps on the stems).
Garlic has a very pungent and distinct smell that can cling to your hands, it can also sometimes be a bit fiddly to remove the skin from each clove. Although this isn’t hugely time-consuming, this hack makes it that much easier.
For this to work, firstly take the garlic bulb and break off the cloves. Using a Kitchen knife, simply hit the clove with the side of the knife. Once done, the skin will now easily peel off in one swift motion.
Separating Egg Yolks from Whites
When baking, there are many occasions when the recipe requires you to separate the egg yolk from the egg white. If you have tried to do this, you may have found this to be a slightly messy ordeal.
Luckily for you, an empty bottle can be an incredibly effective tool for separating this. Simply crack the desired amount of eggs into a bowl with your empty bottle in hand. By squeezing the bottle to release the oxygen inside the bottle you can then slowly release this tension to suck the egg yolk up inside.
Peeling Potatoes without a Peeler
Peeling potatoes, although very simple, can become a very laborious task when cooking large quantities. This next method completely removes the need for a peeler at all.
To begin with, boil the potatoes until fully cooked. Once, the potatoes are boiled, place them into a bowl of ice cold water for 5 seconds. After 5 seconds, remove the potatoes and firmly grip the potato at both ends. With a very firm grip, begin to twist the ends of the potato until the skin breaks in the middle. Once you have done this, each half of the potato skin will now pull off with practically no effort.
This hack is not only much quicker than using a peeler, but also much easier to clean up.
Preventing Pasta from Boiling Over
Although this trick can work for anything that you would want to boil, this hack is so useful as it allows you to not continuously monitor your food. This hack almost seems hard to believe, but once you have tried it once, you will wonder why you haven’t been doing it for years.
While boiling your food, place a wooden spoon across the top of the pot… and that is literally it! Because wood is incredibly bad at conducting heat, as the heat rises, the wood almost repels this heat so that it does not rise further out of the saucepan.
After a night out on the town, many people retreat to one of the various fast food establishments on their way back home. The problem with this is that the 20-inch pizza that seemed like a great idea the night before is often barely finished by the morning. If you have been in a situation similar to this, you may have tried to reheat this pizza in the microwave to find that your once delicious meal is now incredibly dry, a shadow of its former self.
For the perfect, day-old pizza experience, make sure to place a glass of water into the microwave along with your pizza. When heated, the water adds moisture to the air which in turn stops your pizza from drying out. Perfect!
This hack is essential for the meat-eaters out there. When considering food hygiene it is well-known that you should always wash your hands after touching anything that has come in contact with any raw meat.
It might seem so obvious but you should aim to supply your kitchen with a specific chopping board for meat and another chopping board for everything else. This is so you never run the risk of letting the meat juices from one chopping board come into contact with anything else. To make this even simpler, why not opt for two different colours so that you can easily differentiate.
Cleaning a Cast Iron Skillet
A cast iron skillet is a great choice as they usually come pre-seasoned and food will generally not stick to them. If you have ever noticed stubborn stains and crust built up on the pan, you may be inclined to reach for the dishwasher soap and begin scrubbing it with a scourer.
The proper way to ensure that your Cast Iron skillet remains as effective as possible is to opt for a salt scrub, using kosher salt. Rather than using a scourer, fold over a piece of kitchen towel and begin scrubbing the dirt away with the kosher salt solution.
As you can see, there are a variety of hacks that can be used in the kitchen. There are probably even hundreds more that would be impossible to include in one article. We hope that by reading this, you may be inclined to try one out to see whether this will help you the next time you are cooking, even if you just want to impress your friends and family.

Why Upgrade Your Kitchen in 2019?
As mentioned, it’s always a very busy time of the year in the property market during the New Year. This means that many may be looking to carry out upgrades on their property in order to move into another property or they may have purchased a property and have a new kitchen area that they want to make their own. Although it’s not recommended to carry out an extensive re-haul of your kitchen area when you are imminently going to sell your property, there’s no doubt that a clever and modern redesign of your kitchen can be the centrepiece of your property and this can even increase the overall value of your property. You can carry out small changes to your kitchen area that can make noticeable differences without having to redesign the entire kitchen area. This is also a good idea because potential homeowners are likely looking at a property that they would like to live in and not a kitchen area that has already been designed for them.
If you are currently unhappy with your kitchen area and are looking for a New Year’s resolution then why not consider redesigning your kitchen area? There’s a great deal of kitchen designs that are becoming more and more popular (we will come onto these in a moment) which can completely change the way that you use your kitchen space. If you find that you are restricted by your kitchen or need more space or equipment to cook the food that you love then it’s probably time to think about redesigning your kitchen space. We offer a free 3D kitchen design service to help you visualise, plan and budget your new kitchen and our experienced kitchen designers have many years of experience in the kitchen design and installation industry.
Now that we’ve talked about the reasons as to why you may want to install a new kitchen. Lets move onto the latest design trends and predicted popular styles of 2019:
1. Changes to Shelving Units
One aspect of your kitchen that is always popular with those looking to redesign their kitchen space is their storage units. This extends nicely to shelving units with a rise in popularity of open shelving seemingly on the rise. Similarly to the style of hotels and shops, open shelving is a popular solution and replacement to upper cabinets and can be used to transform your kitchen space.
2. Traditional Kitchens Still Maintaining Popularity
The traditional kitchen design is set to still be a popular option in 2019. With the effortless integration with modern designs; traditional fixtures and lighting, taps and worktops as well as natural stone will likely be highly popular kitchen designs in 2019. Traditional kitchens offer a rustic appearance that is a homage to the past and combining this with sleek modern designs can create a stunning and inviting kitchen space.
3. Copper and Gold Designs Still Take Prevalence
Metallic colours and designs seem to becoming more and more popular and we mentioned the prevalence of gold and copper in our kitchen design trends of 2018 article. The gold and copper designs are seen mostly on faucets and taps or cabinet handles and look very effective when combined with lighter colours for example. The combination of copper or gold designs can add a sense of class to your kitchen and small changes can be adopted on a strict budget to incorporate this into your kitchen design!
4. Interior Garden Areas?
Although you may not have creating green areas in your kitchen at the forefront of your mind, many kitchen owners (a trend that has been been adopted by professional chefs over the years) is including a herb garden or hanging herbs in your kitchen. Not only can this add to the rustic appearance of your kitchen, but who doesn’t love cooking with fresh ingredients and fresh herbs. The fresh herbs can also add a wonderful and natural fragrance to your kitchen area.
5. Changing the Kitchen Sink?
Although the kitchen sink seems like one of the most conformed and more traditional areas of your kitchen, this may be set to change in 2019. There have been some very interesting and quirky kitchen sinks created which have even included cutting board areas that can be placed within the kitchen sink area. Although this may be one of the more quirky design trends of 2019, perhaps you may want to consider using your kitchen sink area for additional functions – especially if you find that you have a lack of space in your current kitchen.
6. Kitchen Cabinet Handles are Still a Point of Interest
With the wide range of kitchen cabinet handles that are available, kitchen cabinet handles and handles around the kitchen are always a point of interest, especially when carrying out a small or extensive kitchen redesign. There’s a huge range of kitchen handles and cabinet handles that are available which you can choose from to suit your kitchen design and design tastes. Look out in 2019 for handles and straps as well as indented handles which pushes forward the modern yet minimalist design. Redesigning your kitchen handles and cabinet handles is a simple yet effective way of transforming the look as well as the functionality of your kitchen.
7. Emphasis on Lighting
We mentioned in our kitchen design trends of 2018 article that lighting was becoming more and more of a prominent and important feature of the kitchen space. With the various types of fittings and lighting systems available, many homeowners have assessed and changed their light fittings or lighting systems in their kitchen.
